The Malaria Disease Information System or MDIS is a malaria data entry, collection and storage system created by EKbana for the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division(EDCD) of the Ministry of Health- Nepal.

The Client

EDCD Epidemiology and Disease Control Division was established as a Division of Statistics in 2030 BS and reorganized as Epidemiology and Statistical Division in 2035. According to new organizational structure 2050 BS, this Division is named as Epidemiology and Disease Control Division. With the guidance of MOHP and co-ordination of central level organizations, hospitals, regional health directorate and medical colleges, along with technical assistance of WHO activities are being performed. Technical as well as financial support is provided by WHO, USAID, DFID and Global Funds for EDCD to achieve the objective of this division

The System

MDIS can be categorized into two systems, one is a mobile application which is used by the targeted users to send in reports, and the other is a CMS which controls and elaborates the process into data analysis, data entry and much more.

The main purpose of this system is to record detailed descriptions of malarial disease in Nepal on a case by case basis.
The Mobile application which is available in all iOS and Android devices contains a form that is filled by the representative of health centers all across the country. Once the form is filled the user can send the information to the central database via the SMS. The user then receives a confirmation of whether the complete data has been sent to the central database. As one of the criteria of the system was to enable the data to be sent via SMS due to other options being not available in many parts of Nepal, the verification was needed as SMS are sent in chunks and could sometimes get lost in the transfer.

The central database of the system is managed by the central CMS where all the messages sent via the mobile application from across the country is stored. The CMS contains useful features such as a dashboard with various visualized data present, validation of the received messages, fill up a Malaria Case Investigation Form (CIF), view previous CIF, user management section and the system and settings management.

MDIS Central system and Mobile Application

A detailed User Guide was provided to EDCD to showcase the ease of use of the MDIS system. This system is now active and in-use by EDCD, this is a milestone for us here at EKbana. This is the first system we have created specially for the government of Nepal and feel as a stepping stone for further projects of such nature.
